You can't keep adding to a Health Savings Account (HSA) without limit. The IRS sets a contribution cap each year, and it includes anything your employer contributes.
2027 HSA contribution limits
| Self-only coverage | Family coverage | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum contribution (you + employer) | $4,500 | $9,000 |
| Catch-up contribution (age 55 and older) | + $1,000 | + $1,000 |
2027 requirements for an HSA-eligible health plan
| Self-only | Family | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum deductible | $1,750 | $3,500 |
| Maximum out-of-pocket | $8,700 | $17,400 |
To contribute to an HSA you must be covered by a qualifying high deductible health plan (HDHP) and generally cannot be enrolled in Medicare or claimed as a dependent on someone else's return.
