What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?

Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary Medicare program that gives eligible people with Medicare drug coverage access to certain GLP-1 weight loss medications for $50 a month. It started July 1, 2026 and is scheduled to run through December 31, 2027.

The short version

It covers three GLP-1 drugs: Foundayo (tablet), Wegovy (injection or tablet), and Zepbound (KwikPen only).
Your cost is a flat $50 copayment for a one-month supply, no matter your income.
You must have Medicare Part D drug coverage to participate.
It is available nationwide, in all 50 states and U.S. territories.
It is a short-term CMS demonstration, not a permanent Medicare benefit.

Why is it called a "bridge"?

Medicare Part D has historically not covered drugs used solely for weight loss. The GLP-1 Bridge is a short-term CMS demonstration that runs outside the normal Part D benefit while longer-term policy is worked out. Because it sits outside Part D, your own drug plan is not the payer, and Part D plans did not have to opt in for their members to use it.

How the program is run

For 2026, CMS uses a single central processor to handle prior authorization, claims, and payment to pharmacies. In practice that means:

Your Part D plan does not approve or deny your GLP-1 Bridge prescription. Medicare does.
Your $50 payments do not appear on your Part D Explanation of Benefits or your Medicare Summary Notice.
Your $50 payments do not count toward your Part D deductible or your yearly out-of-pocket limit.

Who is it for?

The program is aimed at people using GLP-1s for weight management who have a qualifying BMI and, in some cases, a related health condition. It is not for people who already get a GLP-1 covered by their Part D plan, and it is not for people with type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease, since a regular Part D plan may already cover a GLP-1 for those conditions.

What it does not do

It does not replace your Part D drug plan. You still need one to qualify.
It does not cover every GLP-1 on the market, and it does not cover every form of the drugs it does cover.
It cannot be combined with Extra Help or the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan to lower or spread out the $50.
