Premium tax credits (subsidies) lower your monthly premium for Marketplace plans. To qualify for 2027, you generally need all of the following.
- Income between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. Because the enhanced credits expired after 2025, income above 400% of FPL no longer qualifies. See our 2027 income limits article for dollar amounts.
- You buy the plan through the Marketplace (HealthCare.gov or your state exchange). Plans bought directly from a carrier outside the Marketplace do not get the credit.
- You are not eligible for other qualifying coverage, such as Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare, or affordable employer coverage.
- Employer coverage is considered affordable if the employee-only premium for the lowest-cost qualifying plan is 10.22% or less of household income in 2027. If it costs more, you may qualify for a credit.
- You are a U.S. citizen or lawfully present in the United States.
- You file a federal tax return and reconcile any advance credits you received. Married couples generally must file jointly.
How much you get
The credit equals the benchmark Silver plan premium minus your expected contribution, which ranges from 2.15% to 10.22% of income in 2027.
| Household income (% of FPL) | Starting percentage of income | Ending percentage of income |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 133% | 2.15% | 2.15% |
| 133% to less than 150% | 3.23% | 4.30% |
| 150% to less than 200% | 4.30% | 6.78% |
| 200% to less than 250% | 6.78% | 8.66% |
| 250% to less than 300% | 8.66% | 10.22% |
| 300% to 400% | 10.22% | 10.22% |
The enhanced credits that applied from 2021 to 2025 expired. As of October 2, 2026 we have not found evidence that Congress extended them.
